The Ludicrous N900 Powermat Mod

Inspired by the whole problem of the USB port becoming loose on the N900 I started to mod my N900 “a little bit”. Essentially, I added a Powermat receiver to the back of my N900 such that it can now be charged wirelessly. The pictures give some impressions of the brute force applied. Not necessary to mention that this for sure voids any warranty. Furthermore, if you do something similar you do this all at your very own responsibility and risk. Please see also the other disclaimers in the talk.maemo.org thread: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=72753

Above pictures show the first version of this mod. I am currently using the third(?) version of this mod.

libswt-hildon

As I also wanted to use To-Do-O (which uses Java and SWT) on my N900 I started to port SWT to the Hildon UI as used in Fremantle. The result is called libswt-hildon and is available in the extras-testing repository in binary form and on the Maemo garage site in source form as one big patch.

The whole thing started off with a simple patch taken from https://evolvis.org/plugins/mediawiki/wiki/jalimo/index.php/Maemo. During the development I added many more features like support for the touch UI, native Hildon dialogs or support for the Fremantle version of Mozilla Firefox (Fennec). For more details please see the linked thread below and the patch itself.

This all was possible as Hildon essentially extends GTK and SWT ships with a GTK version as well. So much of the work was to figure the Hildon additions to GTK out and how to meaningfully integrate these with SWT. During this work I learned quite a lot about GTK, Hildon, the GObject system, SWT, and JNI. 🙂

VUMeter

VUMeter is a fun-tool to display the sound level. VUMeter presents the current sound level using different views.

Furthermore VUMeter provides many configuration options. You can e.g. store the recorded sound levels to a file, trigger a command based on sound level, or configure the colors shown in some views. Please note that VUMeter is intended as “fun application” and does most likely not display the exact sound level.

VUMeter is currently available for Maemo Fremantle (N900) and can be installed via the application manager from the extras repository. A port to MeeGo / Harmattan is in work.

The source code is available on the Maemo garage page: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/vumeter

What’s next?

So, first things first. Some of my projects are already quite old. I’ll try to add these in chronological order. While I do this I also want to work out how to structure such a blog in a good way. So most probably the content and structure will change a lot in the near future. 😉
